SERMI – What Motorists Need to Know!
The automotive aftermarket is changing fast. As vehicle security and digitalisation increase, access to critical repair data is becoming more restricted. One of the most significant developments is SERMI — but what is it, and why does it matter?

What is SERMI?
SERMI (Security?Related Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information) is a Europe?wide accreditation scheme that authorises access to sensitive vehicle security data. Although outside the EU, the UK is the first non?EU country to adopt SERMI, with enforcement beginning on 1 April 2026.
First introduced in Sweden in 2023 and now rolling out across Europe, SERMI places security and accountability at the centre of vehicle repair. In the UK, the scheme is operated by RMI Standards and Certification (RMISC) and applies to independent garages, not manufacturer?affiliated dealers.
Its purpose is simple: to give authorised independent workshops legitimate access to vehicle security data that was previously restricted to franchised dealers.
Many major manufacturers have already joined the scheme, including Citroen, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes?Benz, Nissan, Stellantis brands, Toyota, Vauxhall and others, with more expected to follow.
What does it affect?
Modern vehicles rely heavily on secure data for routine repairs. Even straightforward jobs — such as winding back a brake calliper — can require access to security?related systems.
SERMI controls access to functions such as:

…and manufacturers appear keen to add more. According to the Institute of the Motor Industry, it is assumed that SERMI will soon include anything that isn’t ringfenced under European On-Board Diagnostics (EOBD) and emissions.
Without SERMI approval, independent garages cannot legally access these systems.
Why SERMI matters
SERMI provides a secure authorisation trail showing who accessed which vehicle, when, and why. It strengthens data security, reduces vehicle theft and fraud, and protects both motorists and manufacturers.
The scheme replaces multiple manufacturer?specific approvals with one unified system, reducing complexity while raising standards. It also helps prevent unqualified individuals from working on security?critical systems, supporting higher repair standards and consumer protection.
For motorists, SERMI ensures:
- Secure, authorised handling of vehicle data
- Protection against theft and misuse
- Fair competition between independent garages and dealers leading to competitive pricing
- Confidence that repairs meet manufacturer and regulatory requirements
Who SERMI applies to
SERMI aims to raise standards and choice for consumers. It brings together vehicle manufacturers, independent operators, remote service suppliers and their employees. To qualify, both the business and at least one employee must be registered and approved.
Accreditation includes:
- Business verification and compliance checks
- Technician identity and background screening
- Secure data?handling procedures
- Ongoing audits
Only workshops that meet these strict requirements receive approval.
How this affects motorists
SERMI preserves customer choice. Motorists can continue to choose between franchised dealers and SERMI?approved independent garages, with confidence that both meet the same security standards.
Non?approved garages will not have full access to manufacturer?level security data. There is also growing speculation that insurers may take SERMI approval into account when setting manufacturer warranty considerations.
Trust, Legitimacy and Competence
SERMI is a major step forward for the independent aftermarket. While it introduces new responsibilities, it also ensures independent workshops can continue to offer comprehensive repairs safely and legitimately in an increasingly secure, data?driven automotive world.
From 1 April 2026, access to vehicle security systems from major manufacturers in the UK requires official SERMI authorisation.
Redbourn Auto Solutions is fully SERMI?approved, giving us authorised access to manufacturer security systems. Our business and technicians have been formally verified, data is handled securely in line with strict compliance requirements, and all work meets SERMI standards — without delays or workarounds.
SERMI isn’t just about tools. It’s about trust, legitimacy and competence — and knowing your vehicle is in genuinely authorised hands. Look for the logo!
